Instagram’s end-to-end encryption feature is being disabled today, May 8, 2026, marking a dramatic reversal of Meta’s seven-year commitment to encrypted messaging. The company quietly announced its withdrawal in March via a terms update, citing insufficient user adoption despite making E2EE optional rather than the default.

The decision has reopened disputes between child protection groups who support less encryption and privacy advocates who oppose Meta’s increased ability to access messaging data for AI development.

Meta pledged to make messaging “private” by introducing end-to-end encryption on Facebook and Instagram in 2019. The company completed the transition to Facebook Messenger in 2023 but made Instagram’s E2EE optional because it planned to make E2EE the default setting.

The organization has now decided to stop implementing its original plan. Instagram has gained access to all direct message content as it now operates without E2EE, including access to images, videos and voice notes. Users who need encrypted messaging should use WhatsApp as it maintains E2EE as its default encryption method.

Groups concerned about child protection, such as the NSPCC, support the change, saying that E2EE makes it easier for predators to avoid detection and abuse children.

However, Maya Thomas of privacy campaign group Big Brother Watch argued that the move was a result of “government pressure” and “harmful to the protection of children’s data”.

Cybersecurity expert Victoria Baines identified an underlying trend: “Social media companies are exploiting our conversations for marketing purposes, and more recently, they’ve been focusing on AI training, where messaging is extremely useful.”

Earlier, ikTok had announced in March that it had no plans for E2EE direct messages. Two weeks later, Instagram formally kicked off its rollout. Major platforms including Signal, WhatsApp, iMessage, and Google Messages maintain E2EE as the default; Discord plans to follow.
